Gregor Mendel (1822-1884)

Mendel is known by many as the farther of modern genetics, possibly an unlikely title for a man who grew pea plants as a hobby. Mendel, who was a monk, conducted his studies of inheritance traits in pea plants within the monastic gardens of the abbey of St. Thomas in Brno (Czech Republic). He originally joined the monastery in order to further his education. Being the son of a poor farming family, he would have otherwise been unable to access higher education.

The monastery sent Mendel to study towards a teaching degree at the University of Vienna; however, he was unsuccessful in a number of exams and ultimately dropped out of university education. Returning to the rugs monastery, he brought with him an enquiring mind and a desire to learn about the natural world without being burdened by orthodox religious explanations.

Between 1856 and 1863, he conducted a number of experiments using a straightforward crossing technique, and he documented his findings in exceptional detail. Mendel realised that when plants with different flower colours were crossed, the offspring only carried the traits of one of its parents, not a combination as he first expected. Mendel named the traits that were visibly expressed in the hybrids as ‘dominant traits’ and those that were not visible as ‘recessive traits’.

Mendel then continued his experiments by self-fertilising his hybrid offspring. He discovered that there was frequently a 3:1 ratio of characteristics for the second generation. For example for every three plants with red flowers, one would be produced with white flowers. This meant that a plant with the red flowering trait may also carry the recessive white flowering trait, which although remains dormant, may be passed on to offspring.

Following the success of his experiments, Mendel published his findings in the ‘Journal of the Brno Natural History Society’ in 1866. Unfortunately, his work received very little recognition, possibly because he was not a renowned scientist and the scientific community never really noticed the significance of a monks work.

After his publication, Mendel continued his experiments within the grounds of the monastery. He took his experiments a stage further by conducting animal experiments (breeding bees). He was able to breed bees with the desired characteristic (very high honey production), although it is said that these animals had to be destroyed because they were very prone to stinging people within the monastery and the surrounding village.

In 1868 Mendel was elected Abbot of the monastery and he did not continue with any significant scientific investigation after this time. Mendel died in 1884, without receiving any significant scientific accolade for his accomplished works. It was not until 1900 that the Dutch botanist Hugo De Vries rediscovered Mendel’s work. By the 1920’s Mendel’s work had been linked to the Darwinian theory of Evolution to explain the variation in gene frequency of ‘Mendelian pairs’ of characteristics within a particular group or populous over succeeding generations.

The terms ‘recessiveness’ and ‘dominance’, which were coined by Mendel are still used within the field of genetics today. Similarly Mendelian genetics is widely studied at all academic levels. Mendel’s influence on modern genetics cannot be over-stated. It is known that many diseases can be inherited. Even looking to the plants that begun his study of hereditary, we now see many varieties are ‘engineered’ in laboratories to exhibit certain desired characteristics. The title ‘father of modern genetics’ seems well deserved.
