Should A Sample Of DNA Be Taken At Birth?

One of my favourite programs on television is Crimewatch. I find it really interesting to watch and hear about the various crimes that have been committed.

I do however become quite frustrated when I hear one of the detectives or presenters make a comment like, all we require is a name because we have the perpetrators DNA.

If only there was a national DNA database then they would not need us to call. Am I in a minority, or do other people agree that there should be a database of this kind?

In my opinion a DNA database would cut crime, it would certainly act as a big deterrent. If somebody was then so stupid as to commit a rape for example, then it would, if a DNA sample had been left or taken quick enough, be quite easy to detect and arrest them.

This would then put an end to the term “serial rapist”.

A sample of DNA can help to solve a multitude of crimes and therefore crime would fall. I really can not see any real argument for not having such a database.

I have, of course, heard the other side of the argument. Some people suggest that it would infringe on a person’s human rights, fair enough I suppose, I am sure all wood be criminals would agree.

Our current society is far too concerned about the rights of people who are doing wrong. It is time to get tough and to start doing anything to protect the victims or potential victims.

We apparently live in a democratic society, so let the people decide in a national vote. Britain should be the first nation to take such a step; we should be the leaders of justice in the world, not just the followers of other nations, such as America.
